Start with the holiday you want
Would you rather explore temple architecture, spend a few days in the hills, or slow down by the water? Pick one of those as the centre of the trip. South India is far too large to treat as a single weekend destination. A shorter route with two or three comfortable bases is usually a better first visit than a different hotel every night. Our itineraries below are suggestions, not fixed packages or promises about driving times.
A week from Chennai: coast and heritage
Spend your arrival day settling in instead of starting a long drive after an overnight flight. Give Chennai a day, then use Mamallapuram as your next base for the Shore Temple and other Pallava monuments. For the remaining days, choose either more time by the coast or a carefully paced extension towards Thanjavur. If your return flight leaves from Chennai, protect the final night for the journey back. Check monument hours, hotel access and the total driving distance before paying.
A week from Bengaluru: Mysuru and a slower hill stay
Allow your first day for arrival and rest. Spend two nights around Mysuru, then choose Coorg or Chikkamagaluru for a hill stay. Choose one, rather than rushing through both. Confirm the final road into an estate property before choosing a large vehicle. On the last day, leave a generous airport buffer; the attractive part of this route is time at the destinations, not collecting as many stops as possible.
Ten to fourteen days: add Kerala thoughtfully
A longer trip can combine a heritage section with Kerala, but check the transfer days before booking hotels. Fort Kochi, Munnar and either Alappuzha or Kumarakom offer different experiences. You do not need both backwater bases unless there is a specific reason. An open-jaw flight can reduce backtracking. IPCBus currently accepts road journeys starting in Chennai or Bengaluru; a journey beginning in Kochi is not currently available through our planner.
How much time should we leave between stops?
A navigation estimate is driving time, not the whole day. Add breakfast, toilets, photo stops, security queues, hotel check-in and rest. For a family or mixed-age group, choose one main attraction and an optional second visit rather than promising four. Share any mobility needs before selecting accommodation. A hotel advertised as heritage or hillside may have steps and limited vehicle access.
What should we book first?
Start with flights and entry documents, then the limited-capacity experience you would be disappointed to miss: a train, a timed religious visit, a wildlife activity or a particular stay. Build the vehicle itinerary around those confirmed reservations. Keep the cancellation terms together so changing one booking does not create avoidable costs elsewhere. Don’t pay a transport deposit on the assumption that an attraction ticket will become available later.
A budget that does not hide the extras
Compare the full trip, not just the daily vehicle rate. Your list should include rooms, breakfasts and other meals, attraction tickets for the correct nationality and age, guides, local shuttles, parking, road tolls, permits, driver expenses and taxes. Hotel rates vary with dates, room type and occupancy, so this guide does not quote a made-up nightly price. Ask for written totals and identify which items are estimates before agreeing.
What changes during holidays and heavy rain?
Book popular holiday stays early and check the event programme before planning around a festival. Rain can affect viewpoints, boats and hill routes. Keep a nearby alternative that does not depend on another long transfer. Check the local forecast and access notices shortly before departure, not only when you first book. Your hotel and driver should both have the same updated itinerary.
