Planning a trip to Ooty
Ooty works best as a slow Nilgiri holiday: gardens, tea country and short outings, with time left between them. Families should resist combining every lake and viewpoint into a single day. The hill approach, town traffic and walking inside attractions can make a short map distance feel much longer.
What to see
Start with the Government Botanical Garden for a gentle introduction to the hill landscape, then choose either the Rose Garden or Ooty Lake. Doddabetta is a separate viewpoint outing, with visibility depending on cloud. Pykara offers a different landscape outside town; Avalanche and Emerald belong in a separate day plan rather than an overcrowded afternoon.
When to visit
March–May for a summer escape; October–February for cooler days. Allow for showers and fog in any season.

Use day one for arrival and one garden. On day two, choose a Pykara outing with a relaxed lunch stop. Reserve day three for a viewpoint or a short town walk before descending.
