December to February: a popular touring window
Winter is a useful starting point for a mixed Kerala holiday combining a city, hills and either the backwaters or coast. Keep the number of bases proportionate to the length of the trip. Fort Kochi, Munnar, Alappuzha or Kumarakom, and a beach stay can become tiring when squeezed into too few nights. Road transfers, hotel check-in and activity reporting all need time. Choose fewer destinations if your priority is rest.
Onam and the festival calendar
Onam generally falls in August or September and is an important period for family travel and cultural celebrations. Exact dates vary, so use Kerala Tourism’s current festival calendar. A festival experience should identify the actual venue, programme and booking arrangements. Do not assume a hotel stay includes a special meal, performance or event ticket. Ask what is included and whether any festival supplement applies before accepting the package.
Vishu, Pooram and school holidays
Vishu is associated with April, while Thrissur Pooram commonly falls in April or May. Confirm the year’s dates and local arrangements rather than relying on a generic seasonal guide. Summer school breaks can also increase demand for Munnar and other cooler stays. For crowded events, consider noise, walking, heat and the needs of children or older travellers before committing to a full-day programme.
June to September: understand a monsoon holiday
A monsoon stay can be appealing when the accommodation and a slower pace are the main attraction. It should not depend on guaranteed swimming, trekking, waterfall access or uninterrupted boating. Heavy rain can affect hill roads and local activities. Follow official alerts and choose flexible plans. Ask accommodation and activity providers for their own cancellation and rescheduling terms; these may differ from the vehicle operator’s terms.
Backwaters, beaches and year-end costs
Christmas and New Year can bring strong demand at resorts, beaches and houseboats. Compare like-for-like products: a day cruise, shared boat and private overnight houseboat are different purchases. Confirm boarding access, lifejackets, meals, air-conditioning hours and the complete route. For road travel, itemise driver expenses, parking, tolls and extra hours. Never use the word luxury as a substitute for a written description of the actual vehicle or boat.
