Planning a trip to Hampi
Hampi is a spread-out heritage landscape, not a single monument. Its appeal comes from understanding the relationship between temples, royal structures, bazaars and the rocky setting. A guide and two properly paced days can make a much greater difference than attempting to visit every named ruin.
What to see
The Virupaksha Temple area introduces an active religious centre within the historic landscape. The Vittala Temple precinct and the royal enclosure offer different aspects of Vijayanagara architecture. Keep time for the spaces between monuments as well as the monuments themselves; access rules and transport arrangements can differ by precinct.
When to visit
November–February is generally more comfortable for extensive outdoor walking. Start early during warmer months.
A suggested itinerary
Dedicate one day to the sacred centre and nearby walks. Use another for the Vittala area and selected royal structures, with a midday rest. A third morning can cover a missed stop or a quieter guided walk. Choose your accommodation base with the daily sightseeing circuit in mind.
